Chorus members to sing at D.C. Quilt display
by Roger Durbin
Cleveland-Several members of the North Coast Men's Chorus will be joining three special choruses which will perform during the Names Project Quilt display in Washington, D.C. over the weekend of October 11-13. The choruses, made up of singers from gay and lesbian singing groups across the country, were assembled by GALA, the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses, in response to a Names
so long as AIDS is an issue in gay life, our men's chorus will sing songs that address it. In every concert, at least one song is reserved for this purpose and is pointedly aimed at the crisis.
"Walt Whitman in 1989" comes to mind in particular, since it comes from the AIDS Songbook, which is a collection of music that

Project Foundation request for a concert. A women's chorus, a men's chorus, and a mixed chorus will perform in “Music for Life,” on Sunday evening, October 13, at 8:00p.m. in DAR Constitution Hall, 18th & D Streets, N.W.
The idea of having choral works performed as part of the AIDS Memorial Quilt display is a sound and welcomed one.
"I believe that music does have the power to heal; if not physically, at least spiritually” said Timothy Robson, North Coast's music director. "In virtually every culture, at times of joy and sorrow, people turn to music for celebration and comfort."
In this instance, the toll of AIDS on the gay community has been monumental and devastating. It is right and just that the Names Project invite the singers among us from around the this country and others to add their voices in commemoration and remembrance for those who are gone, and in undespairing anticipation that the disease itself will be controlled and eradicated

deals with varying aspects of the disease and its physical, emotional, and spiritual impact.
A few years ago, the Chorus sang at the Cleve-
land Play House on World AIDS Day, December 1.
Robson remembers it well. "Three days after the death of my own mother in 1994,” he recalled, "the Chorus performed Kris Anthony's 'When We No Longer Touch,' the work which will be the centerpiece of 'Music for Life." These words and music which represent anger, denial, and, ultimately, reconciliation were very helpful to me in my time of grief. The 'Music for Life' concert in Washington celebrates the 'lives of those lost to AIDS, but also celebrates ongoing life for us survivors."
For the Chorus members who are joining the choruses in Washington, there are a variety of interests we'll be representing: The chorus and the members we've lost to this disease, our own friends and partners, and the Cleveland and northeast Ohio area.
Tickets for the concert may be purchased by calling TicketMaster at 800-551-7328 or in Washington at 202-467-7328. Proceeds from the concert go to the Names Project Foundation and to GALA Choruses.
